Filling the Gap of Under Representation of Caribbean Brands
The female owned lifestyle brand Okoye By Kim fills a gap of under-representation as it celebrates the vibrancy and uniqueness of our shared culture and history, captured in our transitional accessories, clothing and other products. We use our platform to connect creatives, entrepreneurs and artisans and build community.
We prioritise authenticity and use stories from childhood, going to school, church and living in a close nit family inspire to our collections. Fabrics are purchased from local vendors who have become like family. Our inclusive belts are made for petite and plus size women and are worn by females of all ages as we celebrate diversity in our images, campaigns and messages.
Sustainability
The Caribbean region is home to some of the world’s most biodiverse ecosystems. We are sensitive to the impact of climate change and being responsible in our manufacturing. Okoye supports the Barbados’ policy aimed at ensuring environmental sustainability principles.
Where possible we use eco-friendly materials like cotton and linen in our manufacturing. We do not believe in fast fashion and encourage women to shop their closets and repurpose their clothing by adding accessories.
We work collaboratively with experienced small female manufacturers who use a combination of hand made and machine technique in the construction of our belts.
We remain committed to being environmentally responsible and actively recycle our waste and use re-useable packaging.
Our Inspiration
Okoye – Pronunciation: Oh-Koy-Yeh
Okoye means strength, resilience and market place. While the name is most commonly used to refer to the Marvel character in our favourite black super hero movie. The word okoye was selected because it represents the strong resilient Caribbean women that have impacted my life, my grandmother, my mother and women and girls that I admire from all strata of society. I continue to learn from both the young and the young at heart.
